As you may already know, one of the most important factors within developing a personal project or project brief is finding inspiration, whether that is through existing brands or current artists and designers. This is because we can get inspired through specific aspects of their work and use it to influence our choices in our own work. This blog is going to be focusing on artists who experiment heavily with clear, prominent geometric shapes within their design. I have found through my research that artists who heavily experiment with geometric shapes often are left with a result of their design appearing minimalistic, funky and unique. If you would like your next design to hold similar attributes to this, then geometric design may be the next route to take!
I will give you a brief overview of who these artists are, as well as a quick summary of the visual aspects within their work. If you would like more help into HOW to analyse an artist, look back at a previous blog post digesting other artists work, such as Thomas Hedger.
1) Thijmen Geluk
Geluk is an illustrator, printmaker and muralist, living and working in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Geluk focuses on unique, colourful characters and creatures.

"Drawing inspiration from street culture to cubism and everything in between, Thijmen is always searching for new ways to bring his illustrations to life."

Geluk uses shape work to highlight key features in the design so it is easy to see what it is. Shape is the key technique to adding detail within his designs. Geluk uses shape to show light and shadow within his design's allowing the design to look professional and complete. The colours used in Geluk's designs are typically bold and vibrant, which is clear to see in the third image, with the use of vibrant blues, pinks and yellows. Geluk typically places this bright, vibrant colours over a black background to further enhance this effect.

2) Camile Walala
Camile Walala is an extremely successful French multi-disciplinary designer, located in London, England, who is best known for her life-size murals and installations as well as her post-modernism inspired patterns.

“I’ve been using joy as a starting point for everything I’ve done. It’s important for me… living in a big city which can be quite grey, I can see how colour and pattern can bring a lot of joy to people’s lives. It’s very rewarding to have an impact on public spaces.”

Walala's experiments with a range of different touchpoints, ranging from small posters, to books to designing an entire wall of a building. Her work radiates positivity and joy, through simplistic styles and vibrant colours. Her work is a combination of the very simple techniques within graphic design, combining shape work and thick line work. The third picture of the underground passage primarily focuses on using primary colours (red, blue and yellow), which helps add further contrast and vibrancy to her design.

3) Myriam Van Neste
Van Neste is an illustrator from Quebec, based in Vienna, Austria. Van Neste using simplistic shapes to create vibrant imagery of cute items, particularly themed around nature, people and food. Van Neste experiments with a variety of different touchpoints, ranging from clothing, wrapping paper, wallpaper, posters and bottles.

"My bold and playful body of work now includes product and pattern designs, book covers and illustrations as well as murals. I still love to do everything by hand, so every one of my projects start with scissors, colorful paper and a playful collage session!"

Van Neste's line work is very sharp on the corners, allowing the shapes to appear more prominent. The bright, vibrant colours allow the design to appear more radiant. Contrasting colours being placed next to each other help exaggerate this effect. What inspires me most about Van Neste's work is the precision with placement of shapes.

4) Mathieu Labrecque
Labrecque is an illustrator living and working in Montreal. Labrecque's work reminds me of the same graphics which was used in 2000's retro games. Labrecque's work feels very nostalgic because of this. The simplistic, funky style adds a sense of innocence to the design. which is very unique.

What intrigues me most about Labrecque's work is that each design has a sense of uniqueness to it. Most artists tend to strictly keep to the same. style, however the three images above show that Labrecque experiments with a range of different approaches, whilst maintaining a sense of self within his work, which is extremely admirable. The very basic style helps add a sense of innocence and reminiscence in the design.
(Lots of Labrecque's work looked low quality when trying to repost on this blog, so please check out his website and/or Instagram to see other really cool designs!)

5) Two Two Six Studio
Two Two Six Studio (TTSS) is a printer, painter and illustrator, based in Australia. TTSS shape work heavily revolves around precise placement and focus towards clean, parallel placement.

TTSS's work experiments with shape to create pattern. The style of their work reminds me of the style used in Camile Walala's work. The colours used within TTSS's work also inspires me significantly, particularly with the second design shown. The combination of dark blue, black, pink and orange all works together surprisingly well!

6) Sunjin Kim (Humble Beings)
Sunjin Kim, also known as Humble Beings, is an geometric artist who primarily experiments with form making. Sunjin Kim experiments with form making in a way to reconnect with her inner child, which is clear to see with the use of vibrant, fun colours within her designs.

"Reconnecting with my inner child through daily form making."

I have noticed that Kim often experiments with combining both red and green within her work, which are complementary colours, meaning they are opposite each other on the colour wheel. This also means that the colours contrast against each other more, making the design more exciting, which is important for designs particularly when they use such minimal techniques. Kim' style reminds me of both Walala's and Two Two Six Studio.

7) Alice Hoffman
Hoffman is an Illustrator, Art Director based in Zurich, Switzerland. Hoffman has over 15 years experience as an Illustrator and Art Director for leading international agencies, so it is fair to say she is well experienced within her field. In recent years, her focus has swayed towards her own illustrations and Hoffman is now working with agencies, publishers, and clients in the design, food, pharma and lifestyle industry.

"My style is minimalistic, unique, graphic, and naïve with a straight and powerful range of colours."

I have noticed that artists who experiment with geometric patterns also often experiment with bright and vibrant colours. Why is this? Could it be to try and make the design more fun and exciting. To ensure that the design doesn't look boring. The placement of the shapes are also often extremely precise, allowing the design to appear thought out and carefully planned, which is difficult to achieve with designs which use much minimalistic techniques.

8) designerachit
Rachit is an Illustrator and Designer, who primarily experiments with geometric patterns. Rachit's work holds similar visual attributes to Camille Walala's & Two Two Six Studio's work.

The colour palette which Rachit uses is bold, however it is not as vibrant as other geometric artist's palettes are. Instead of using a bright green, Rachit has used a darker, yet bold shade. This muted approach allows the design to appear more calm and reserved compared to other geometric artist's, which allows his work to stand out within his field. If you also explore his website/instagram, you will find that Rachit often makes his geometric patterns 3D, resulting in a impressive, realistic outcome.

9) Soboku_design
Soboku_design is a small graphic designer. My favourite medium which Soboku_design experiments with is her fun illustrations, as they look very cute and adorable. The repetitive concept of posting the same concept continuously in the same layout is extremely inspiring.
Sadly, I cannot attach any photos to this blog for some reason, but please, please click the links to check out her work. Click on all of the links.
"Her hobby is visiting cafes and she posts photos on Instagram. After entering university, she studied graphic design, advertising, DTP, and branding. She specializes in simple graphic expressions, and began receiving projects under the trade name SOBOKU DESIGN."
Her geometric designs are very minimalistic. They are extremely simple shapes placed together to create an outcome, which often seems to be an animal or a bird. Much like other geometric artists, Soboku experiments with using bright, vibrant colours, in attempt to make her designs appear more exciting and enticing.

10) Ray Dak Lam
Ray Dak Lam is a Designer and Illustrator from Edmonton, Canada. Ray Dak Lam experiments primarily with geometric patterns within his design, whilst using other interesting techniques, such as experimenting with gradients and bright, vibrant colours.

"Select Clients & Collaborators: Adobe / Asana / DDB / Doughnut Party / Edmonton International Film Festival / Forbes / GoDaddy / Hulse & Durrell / InVision / Locomotive / McDonald’s / Rogue Wave Coffee Roasters / Servus Credit Union / Volunteer Alberta"

A beige background is something which Ray Dak Lam continuously experiments with, which inspires me. It is much better to use a slightly muted colour over a plain basic white, particularly in minimalistic styles such as this, to help make the design look more exciting and complete. Ray Dak Lam also tends to use primary colours within his work (red, blue and yellow), which helps his designs appear more vibrant and bold.
