Day Project - Bookmark

Reading is something which, honestly, I do not do that often. I struggle to sit and read for long periods of time with most books. Matt Haig is the only author which I have found which is an exemption to this statement. My favourite book of all time is The Humans by Matt Haig, with The Midnight Library by Matt Haig following closely behind. The way Haig tells stories so beautifully in his book is amazing, especially when he intertwines serious problems which the world and society is facing within the meaning, whether that be suicide/suicidal thoughts or self identity. I have a few Matt Haig books which I am yet to read, such as The Hadleys and The Dead Fathers Club, so I thought it would be fun, as a quick day project, to design multiple bookmarks which I can use to read my Matt Haig books.

First, I need to think of a theme. What is another hobby of mine which I have been really enjoying recently? MUSIC & SPOTIFY!! One of my favourite pastimes currently is updating my Spotify playlists. I get so much satisfaction from finding a new favourite song/artist which I can then continue to have on repeat (until I overplay it and start getting bored of it).

Which artists are my favourite? Who could feature on the book mark?

• Loyle Carner - One of my most favourite artists of all time. The lyrics which is uses. Himself as a character is inspiring. How honest and open he is about his struggles with ADHD - inspiring.

• Bakar - My favourite artist currently. Created one of the very few albums where I like EVERY song on the album, which is "Nobody's Home". Currently have this album on repeat.

• Niko B - Creates such unique music. Lyrics are always incredibly funny. For example, "top thing on my bucket list is to slide tackle the Queen". Himself as a character is authentic and inspiring.

• Little Mix - Iconic girl band. Have been a fan for them for years and one of the only artists which I am still a fan of since I was a kid. My favourite member is Jade Thirlwall.

• Rizzle Kicks - The duo did break up many years ago, however they did release some ICONIC music, which English "youngsters" treat like their national anthem.

• Yiigaa - Released one of my favourite songs, which is "Bamboo - Yiigaa, Finn Foxell, KiLLOWEN". Also, has a few other songs which feature in my playlist(s). Such a beautiful and soothing voice.

• WizTheMc - Released some of my favourite songs, which are some of the most popular in my main playlist.

I created a variety of different bookmarks, with all designs making some type of feature in the cover image above. Below, I am only going to analyse my two favourite designs which I am going to use as my bookmarks, on rotation.

Bookmark One:

Above shows the front and back of one bookmark which I created, which is most definitely my favourite out of them all. The use of brown and yellow compliment each other significantly well & radiate a calm and soothing atmosphere, which is fitting for reading. My favourite person (visually) which I illustrated would have to be Bakar, specifically the image in the photo frame which he is holding. The amount of detail applied allows the design to appear very realistic, in turn increasing the professionalism of the design. This bookmark includes 4 of my favourite artists, which are Bakar, Loyle Carner, Yiigaa and WizTheMc.

The illustration style of these designs are also very effective. The main structure is very simple, highlighting simple shapes and outlines. To make the design appear more professional and detailed, I subtlety highlighted areas where light and shadow would hit the chosen character. I also added a thin light brown line around all of the characters as a minor detail, which brings the whole design together and allows the design in the foreground to blend in well with the background, in turn increasing the professionalism of the design.

Bookmark Two:

As mentioned previously, Little Mix are one of my favourite artists, and have been for many, many years now. In terms of genres which I am interested in, they stand out, as their music is more Pop, and I am usually more interested in Alternative Hip Hop. Because of this, I decided that they should feature on a bookmark, especially as they are a group of 4, and there is 4 spaces for people to go.

I created a few different colour combinations for this design, however I think pink is the most fitting colour palette because Little Mix often use pink within their albums (Confetti, Glory Days).
